Dear memebers, We all know the significance of inbound links in SEO. But what are the significance of outbound links in SEO. I know too many outbound links to spammy sites might land you in trouble, what else? is there a limit to outbound links? is there a repeating limit? for example we have a wordpress blog footer link, it is obviously repeated 1000 times if you have 1000 pages right? thanks for your time.. regards, Josh
Good question... I'm also interested in the answer. I know that having outbound links in the common footer will count multiple times in the Yahoo! link tracker for various pages sharing the footer. As far as the repercussions of said repeating outbound links on seo, I can't say for sure : /
That is true, even i observed this while checking the outbound links and it sure does look spammy if the search engine algorithms arent smart enough to understand that it is the footer..but lets wait for someone to clear the air here.. cheers Josh
In short Google doesn't like Link Hoarding so outbound links are a good thing especially when they are to websites related to your theme. So if you have a football site and have outbound links to other football sites (and these links are spread within the content, not in a links page) then it's plus points for you. But when your outbound links become disproportionate to the website content you will start looking like a link farm and then the Google Panda will get very cross! As far as the footer bar goes don't fret. If it is a consistent footer bar and not stuffed full of links this is normal - that is why web design and seo companies like to have their links down there!
doodled is totally correct in his answer (+rep added), a few outgoing links to reputable sites in the same niche are going to be considered by Google as "useful", and that will enhance your site. On the other hand, links to "bad neighborhoods" or a disproportionate number of links on the same page are going to be considered as a no-no, and will drive you down in the SERPs. Forget about the footer, you should only look at a disproportionate number of links on the same page. Note that the links in the footer add up to the total number of links on a page, so don't overdo those!
As such, there is no limit for outbound links... Since quality of outbound link is in your hands, so, make sure each and every link must be relevant to your website and contribute in the enhancing the user experience. There is no repeating limit, but keep one thing in mind... Search Engines hate link spamming.

Out bound links makes your web page valuable and get more and more volume of traffic. But that must be relevant and qualitative. Irrelevant links means least value of your website or webpage.
