I do website marketing for many different sites. I have seen many link sites which target a specific industry, ie: "plumbing", and they have done a good job getting the site to come up on page #1. They, in turn have a valuable web resource, and these days, everyone is charging money for this. Sometimes it's a monthly fee, and other times, it's annual, but establishing the backlink is critical, so they end up getting the $$
If you do find a "free" place to post your link, it's usually got a lot of strings attached or is not very good. (Often it's just a trashy "link farm" as it's called.)

You can try lot of free techniques, But i don't think they have SEO value, most of the programs can give you short term traffic. Not quality back links. Good things are not free, unless you work hard to get each link.

always go for backlinks that are hard to get. these are the ones that will boost ur rankings.

free links are useless in most cases.
