Once you get enough fans of your fan page, you can create a unique URL of your facebook fan page. You have to select one that is available. Then, you can start marketing your URL facebook fan page on Facebook and on print collateral.

I'm a little confused. Is a fan someone who is a member of a group? Or are they totally separate concepts? Like, maybe a group is just people who share a common interest, and a fans are people who look up to someone? It seem like the end result would be the same in both cases: you would just be getting posts from the group or the person you are a fan of, right?

FB is confusing. They are a moving target. Here's what I think.

Friending, previously known as fanning, means you like (previously fan) a FB page. Either a person or a fan page. You can also like a non-FB page which is some sort of dumb counter. Like on these posts.

Sharing means that you are posting something to your wall.

There are also FB groups which you can join. They are essentially a dud, one of FB's initiatives that has not taken off. I think you can probably like or share a group.

There are FB applications too but that's another story.

    They are totally separate.
You can create a group page and invite people to join the group, or create a fan page and entice people to become fans.

The end result is basically the same, the 2 types just operate a little differently.

select "Account" > "Application Settings" on the upper right of the screen, then find "Ads and Pages" on the list (if it's not on the list, choose "Authorized" from the drop-down box, and the list of applications should be more expansive). Click "Edit Settings" and check the box for "Bookmark Ads and Pages." With the Pages icon bookmarked, you'll have a fast way to access your list of Facebook Pages as it will now be on the left-hand bar from now on.

Seems like groups are like topic oriented blogs; and that you can get the posts from that group without having to be a friend of everyone in it.

One thing I still don't understand, though is what is the difference between being a friend of someone and a fan of someone. What happens differently if you become a fan of someone as opposed to just being their friend? Maybe it is nothing for you; it just makes them appear more popular?

I think some more popular/famous people have their own fan pages (like athletes, celebs) where anyone can become a fan without having to ask for approval. On the other hand, they can have their own personal page where they can only have 5000 friends, that they have to approve. Fan pages kind of act like twitters, where you just update the statuses mainly, instead of writing on other people's wall.

since Mitchell gave you direct orders on how to create page and group I'll give you just an advise. To make you page more popular create a custom landing page for it using FBML tutorial. You might use Facebook Templates for this purpose. It will help you to drive more fans to your page.

If you want an easy way to start you can use a Template Fan Page or pay someone to create a custom Fan Page.

For BUSINESS you definitely want to use a PAGE. Only use a Group if it's for something non-commercial.

I created a video about how to set up a Facebook Page and a custom URL (e.g. Facebook.com/YourPageName)
