    Hallo,

can anybody give new/fresh input on this threat (phpbb3 Vs Vbulletin) started long time ago ? It seems that most of the people here preffer Vbulletin.
Is it still the same, and why can you name some reasons ?) ?

Thanks for your new input which would help me (and hopefully others too) to decide for better solution.

    Daniel

P.S.: I have found some good arguments for using Vbulletin here:
    http://imtips.co/phpbb-vs-vbulletin-why-vbulletin.html
but that was posted on September 11, 2009..
I guess many arguments are no more valid, or ?

and this page compare phpbb vs vbulletin:
    http://www.forummatrix.org/compare/phpBB+vBulletin

However, it is not very updated too.

P.P.S: I have just found out that one of my favourite forum is running on vbulletin and I do wonder if something similiar (very clean design; easy orienation; nice/usefull features..etc..) could be designed and easily admistrated with phpbb3

Vbulletin is moving past being just a forum, now vbulletin has its own content management system, blogs, members picture gallery,,,,, all kinds of good stuff.

Setting up a plain jane phpbb might have been good enough 3, 4 or even 5 years ago, but today people want more then just a forum.

With sites like facebook setting new standards, forum software has to change with the times. Unless phpbb has done some major changes to their software over the past few years, their pretty much obsolete.

yep totally agree i'm starting up a forum.
I looked all around for different forum softwares.
Free and Cost ones.. I found vb was the most popular
among users.. and in my opinion much nicer themes.
and i use to be a fan of the free forums but i have switched.

I would also go with vBulletin but you have to realize that you're trying to compare a free open source script to a paid one..
If you wanted to compare IPB to phpBB, I would go with IPB..

I choose phpBB over vBulletin just because I didn't have the budget to go with vBulletin. It might have been better for my site, and I might change over, but we will have to wait and see.

phpbb is some how older and does not look so good as vb. Vbulletin is more pro because of look and mods. But phpbb is more easy and free :)

Here is the problem with vBulletin. They charge a crazy amount for their software when other forum software like IP.Board or Xenforo have the same features and look more attractive. vBulletin is actually loosing to Xenforo. Xenforo is taking over. So as it stands, Xenforo, vBulletin, IP.Board with IPB soon to be number 2. vBulletin 4 is great I love it, hate vB 5. When they released vB 5 a lot of people did not like it and thought it is over done, crowed, and to much a blog rather than a forum community. phpbb is still the leading open source forum software next to myBB with SMF as number 3.

This is something most web masters forget. Members do not care about the software, they care about attractiveness and ease of content. When I first started using forum I had no idea nor cared about the software. I just wanted to go there for what I was looking for. Now that I'm a web master I notice these things and start to pick out things I like/dislike. The fact is most of the populous don't care about the software just the content. Content is king after all.

Vbulletin 4 was released in 2009, and vbulletin 5 is slow and full of bugs. Phpbb is ok, but not great. The best paid forum si XenForo IMO.
