    A subset of SEM is SEO. A subset of SEM is PPC. A subset of SEM is Link Development. A subset of SEM is SMO (facebook ..etc..). A subset of SEM is traditional adverts. A subset of SEM is Paid inclusion.

    SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization while SEM means Search Engine Marketing. SEM is a broad term and SEO is just a part of it.

    SEO is organic as well as free, SEM is paid, the ads shown at the right side are inorganic & we have to pay to Google for every single click.

    SEO is for optimizing your site more user friendly. And SEM means Search Engine Marketing, IE, marketing your products, services through your website. Both SEO and SEM are inter depended.

    Just thought I'd throw this in even though every other man and his dog are saying it; SEM is usually PPC (Paid per click) and usually requires a large investment for the more competitive keywords. SEO is organic search, and is NOT PPC - SEO is preferred as it usually saves on money ;)
