    I try not to mess with too many blog comments, if you add your keyword for the name it then looks like spam and the ones that allow anchor text have already been bombarded with thousands of backlinks.

    Links are extremely important yes but there is much more to it than that, especially if you are going for key phrases that are extremely competitive.

    Commenting has been fantastic for me.
    You should try to find big authority sites, as well as small sites to build relationships on.

    Big authority sites bring lots of traffic and if the author sees, could lead to a good relationship or guest blogging. You need to have a good post. Not one sentencers.
    Small sites give you to opportunity to connect directly with the owner/author since your comment won't get buried.
