A quick search turns up these two definitions of the specific term:

What I think we are actually dealing with, most likely, is not so much a 'new' term, but perhaps a new way of looking at what we are already doing; when the Internet was new, what we did there applied there, but with advances in technology flying at us from all sides, perhaps the second definition becomes more accurate, as it seems to be more inclusive of these new tech-options.

Besides, from an advertising standpoint, "Digital Marketing" has a nice ring to it, sounds powerful, lots of hard consonant sounds...it becomes more a much more persuasive phrase than 'online marketing' or such older phrases.
