    A site map is a text file of the layout of your website. Both Google and Bing in their webmaster guidelines recommend that you submit a sitemap to them, so its definately worth doing! If you do a search for XML sitemap generator you will find a ton of free sites that will generate a sitemap for you.

    As sitemap is really very important for any site. It helps very much for the search engine to get crawled. Both HTML and XML site maps should be used.

    Sitemaps are of two types. HTML and XML sitemap. HTML sitemap is created for users. Whereas xml sitemap helps in easy crawling of web pages by Google. When you have a large website or a dynamic website, xml sitemap is must.

    Using sitemaps has many benefits, not only easier navigation and better visibility by search engines. Sitemaps offer the opportunity to inform search engines immediately about any changes on your site.

    Also, when you have a sitemap and submit it to the search engines, you rely less on external links that will bring search engines to your site. Sitemaps can even help with messy internal links.

    Sitemaps also help in classifying your site content, though search engines are by no means obliged to classify a page as belonging to a particular category or as matching a particular keyword only because you have told them so.

    There are 2 types of the sitemaps:
    1. HTML sitemap: It helps to user to understand the navigation of the website
    2. XML sitemap: It helps crawler to know more about the pages of the website & updated pages of the website

    Both User and Xml sitemaps have it's own unique uses,

    * XML sitemap instruct the search engine bots about the pages of the website that are ready to index.
    * User sitemaps will helpful in guiding the users regarding navigational path of that website. It would be very handy in complex websites.

    Sitemap is important if you have fresh content. It will make google to index your site when it appears if you use the api to notify it when new content is published. If you don't have new content then it's not so important.
