Shared vs VPS hosting and SEO

I have always wondered if using shared hosting affected your SEO. I have a VPS and a shared hosting account for several "crappy" websites. I am about to start a worthwhile site and I don't want to put it on my VPS quite yet because I am planning on upgrading it soon. Despite all the crappy sites of mine and other people's internet junk on the same IP with my shared hosting will this affect me in the SERPS for my new good site?

I heard that same IP range where your site is linked may raise a flag to Google and might consider a link manipulation...

Same here - We have all ONLY heard that some of the people got penalties because other crappy websites on the shared hosting were into spamming . But those are all inferences from the people themselves because Google will never send you a message in your webmaster control panel saying - Sorry dude , you are using the wrong hosting provider , we have to lower your SERPs . Ofcourse we all face some kind of lowering and shooting up of SERPs very frequently but cant be said for sure about the primary reason for it , maybe even Google dance .

Still I would suggest you to take VPS for your serious site because that will give you a proper static C class IP address and also more CPU resources in terms of site load speed which is again a factor in SERPs . Depending on how much your site is projected to earn the decision is upto you whether the extra bit of cash that is invested for a VPS is worth it in the end .

PS : I am using Site5 shared hosting and a friend of mine is using Site5 VPS but both of us are not satisfied with the service , moral - more spend does not always mean good resource . Almost all hosting companies engage in overselling resources that makes for a bad experience for the rest of the sites hosted on the same servers .

There is no difference when it comes to SEO. You are only required to upgrade your hosting as soon as your website requires more resources/memory etc.

There isn't much difference between shared and VPS when it comes to SEO.

The only time I think SEO comes into play with hosting is if you're doing a bunch of link trades between sites that are all on the same shared server.

Shared hosting is fine untill and unless your website IP is different. But dedicated is best. Well this both are of very less priority if SEO is considered.

I very much agree with Alan. Basically different website should be hosted from different IP so that its importance remain popular.

    Hi,
Doesn't its matter for seo which server you are using if you have simple website just like a static then you should use share hosting upto you. you content should be unique and title and description should be available in website.
