How to maintain your site at #1? Is it possible to keep the top position with no SEO?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by Krowon, Mar 24, 2011.

I'm just curious this past few days, I just want to know on how to maintain a site at #1 position, e.g. my site is in #1 position right now because of intensive SEO activity on my site, now the question is, is it possible to maintain the current position at #1 if will stop doing SEO for a long time? Thanks!

No it is not possible, SEO is an on-going thing. Remember that your not the only person to fight for that #1 position. You must always do a follow up of your website and of what could be done to maintain your position (link building, blog commenting, article releases, press releases, etc.)

Another thing, if you maintain your high position without further SEO work, it's probably because the search trend for your product changed. Let's say you buy gold as a business. Then you would most probably optimize for "sell gold" because that is most probably what people are typing as queries. But in 3 months from now people might type "cash for gold" as a query so now you will have to re-optimize your whole website to appear high ranked for that keyword. It is very important to stay updated on the search trends.

Depends on your niche ! If you have found a high search query but low competition keyword SYNONYM then you may rank for a long time even without link building . Same applies to long tail SEO . If you make a post on "how-to-write-good-articles-on-a-sunday" (title sounds crap so plz excuse me ;) ) then you will rank for it for a very long time unless someone writes that exact phrase with more link building than you .

My Point : Your ranking depends less on what you do and more on what your competition does . If you rank for a keyword and other webmasters choose not to make posts on that keyword then you will rank infinitely but if you select a high paying niche with more competition then you may rank in the afternoon and lose ranking in the evening !

The only way to maintain a ranking is keep getting deep links to your site - its about your content, being relevant, and creating authority in your particular niche - the more content you supply your niche users, the better SEO SUccess you'll have - and like Metaseo stated, its not possible to keep a ranking if your A) sucks
    B) content sucks
    C) no deep links
    D) you don't advertise.

You only maintain your rankings when your backlinks are good and of quality - other than that, you won't maintain your search results.

It's not possible no. Maintaining that position means staying on top of whats happening. It means good quality content being added often. It means constant work. If you don't constantly work at it you will drop like a stone.

It is impossible to maintain a constant ranking. Your competitor may build valuable links and reach top or Search engines may update their algorithm as it happened now(Panda Update) to de-promote content farms.

Reducing SEO to a low level after reaching #1 may be a good idea but stopping it atonce will harm the site. Better to keep working on updating fresh quality content and to build authority links under the head of an experienced SEO. Remember, your competitors are pushing the results every moment and you have lots of pressure to keep top rankings. Though it is fine to hold if your keyword is very low competition and your site is already on top position.

Not true, it completely depends on the circumstances whether SEO is required to stay top. Do you think organisations such as Google? Ebay? BBC? use SEO to stay top? No it depends how established you are in your field. If you are a household name, SEO probably isnt an issue. Also if you do a good amount of "foundation SEO" to begin with. Then if there is no real competition online, then you may very well stay top. The time you spend at a high ranking, domain age and maturity etc will keep you their. Also natural links will occur over a long period of time.

It really does depend on what your targeting. If its a very niche keyword and you have little or no competition then you can rank solely on your sites authority and content on the subject. This being said, it's always good practice to bring out fresh and updated content to help maintain those positions.

Obviously if your working on a more competitive keyword (Example: Cheep TVs) then you are going to need a very intensive SEO campaign.

There are lots of competitors around you and in that case if you will stop doing promotion of your site the other will defeat you. So to survive in competition you have to put your efforts daily.

No, you want to keep on building your backlinks. You have reached no #1 position, so spend some time on analyzing and building quality backlinks.

you wont be able to remain on #1 for a long time without SEO.
you can for sometime but ofcourse onpage optimisation must be excellent. like optimised content with proper keyword density, optimised meta tags & proper interlinking of pages. Still you will need some backlinks to get there.
