Are Dropped Domains Really That Bad?

Hi guys,

I'd like to see your view on this issue. I registered a nice .co.uk domain and also grabbed a .com version to protect my name. The .com is, however, a dropped domain. It was registered in 2008 and then dropped after one year. It's not on any spam lists, not on Archive.org and not indexed by Google.

I am now tempted to actually use the .com (initially I wanted to use .co.uk) to build my site because it will have an international appeal.

To be perfectly honest, I think that there's nothing wrong with dropped domains (as long as the previous owner hasn't used it for spamming or other illegal activities). What do you think?

Not bad always. Just don't take everything, consider the proper one with relevancy.

I wouldn't view either as good/bad. It depends on your target audience.

Will the .com of the .co.uk appeal more to your target audience?
Black lists are a concern, you can get them taken off (talk to your domain host and the owners of the Black list and prove change of domain name ownership)

Often people will buy 'dropped' domain names due to their age and possible build up of PR (I myself pay little attention to that), but catchy domain names DO make the difference.

Well, the domain is not on any blacklists and it has never been used for anything. So, there are no backlinks, no PR and no history to it at all.

I just bought it as a sidekick to my .CO.UK but I think the .COM will appeal more to my target audience because I will be able to take this project on an international level. With .CO.UK it would be just for my local UK visitors.

That's the key point. I think a number of people have been burnt by dropped domains because they didn't check. I once worked with someone selling baby food and it turned out their domain used to be used for porn - they were wondering why it couldn't get ranked in the search results!

If you get a nice kosher dropped domain - especially one with good links and maybe even some ambient traffic - then it can help you to get your site started.

 

you can rebuild the domain name out but need sometime. i think it not much affect you unless he old domain name do lot of black list or bad reputation . Or not , there nothing wrong with the domain name. Go for it and do more SEO on it and build your pr for your website and domain name.
