Its no secret that there are some guys especially here in this forum, who love to buy expiring domains which still have some pagerank and make a directory of those domains. Then proudly they are announcing them here in this forum as Pr3, 4 or PR 5 directories. Dont waste your time to submit to those directories ! None of them will have any value for you. What those guys are trying to do is only to cheat you and to make some quick cash. But how can you know if its a good or bad directory ? Well, Googles Pagerank is no longer a criteria as it seems they are no longer supporting it, maybe because they noticed that its to easy to cheat the pagerank. But there are a few tools, which let you check if a website has some value or not. One of this tools is the firefox extension "searchstatus". This tool adds a pagerank, an alexa traffic and a maybe the most important mozrank button to your firefox browser. But first lets look into the name of the directory. Is this really a name for a directory ? Lets say someone is announcing a PR5 directory here which is called "mynameisjonnybrown.com". Please dont be so stupid ! Who would give a directory such a name ? Now lets look into the features of searchstatus. Maybe we can confirm a pagerank 5, but most times those domains have less than 100 backlinks. Thats really suspicious. Every serious directory with a pagerank 5 should have some hundreds or even thousands of backlinks. Guys please dont be so stupid to spent your money for these websites!
The Information you give its very useful but let me add one more thing if the site have a page rank 5 and he convert to that site in web directory google drop his site pr and may be send his website in sandbux which is real waste of you money...
It's not all directories with high PR that make good directories to submit links into. some high PR directories will just last few days before the PR is dropped by google. Make sure you do your research about the actual domain hostory before you submit your website into any directory with funny domain names. most original dedicated directories such as DMOZ.com, YAHOO.com, GOOGLE.com, WEBMXP.com, ALEXA.com and many more are the real deal if you need quality backlinks.
You don't need to install any tools to check the history of a dropped domain directory. Like was already said, the domain name itself is usually the first hint of something shady. I use Archive.org, the site:domain command in Yahoo (Yahoo seems to retain the old page titles) and also look at the backlinks Yahoo is showing, they often tell the story. Even easier is whenever a directory announcement starts with "New PR x" you know it's a dropped domain.
Good directories won't auto-approve links, whether they are free or paid. You can also easily check by visiting the "latest links" section of the directories - are the latest links have good title/description and listed in the right category? If so, chances are, those directories are cool. Directories on dropped domain can be good if the owner strictly moderate links and update link title/description on regular basis. That's all that matters - that's why we pay "review fee" to get your link listed in them.
In my mind, I think you have to need submit only do follow directories for your website.Because from do follow directories you can get back links but through no follow directories you have not get anything like back links.
