Does anybody have any tips for ranking a business high in local search??

You should submit your business keywords in Google local listing and make advertise in local area classified sites.

 

You should get some reviews on local listing, I have seen many websites which ranks have 4-5 reviews with them. Rest it also depends upon the quality backlinks of your website.

 

Target local keyword for your business website. if you are targeting UK country then your keywords should be "Your Keyword In UK" or "City Name Your Keyword"

But they go hand and hand. So to capitalize on local search, hit your local market where they are...
on the i phones and blackberry's as well... This will make it easier to get more reviews and comments about your business on your google place page as well as the other engines.

 

Use the local area, town, city, county name in your site quite a lot and treat it as a keyword.
This will help you rank for searches for your goods or services in this area. For example not just "car rental" but "London car rental".
Have a look at Google Keyword Tool as this will give you an idea of how many people do a local monthly search for these proposed keywords and terms.

Other things you can do are advertise using Adwords, Local Directories both on and offline and the good old-fashioned local newspaper.
If you have a vehicle or location within the area get some vinyls or signs advertising your site.
Leave flyers in cafes, waiting rooms, on noticeboards.
All this will help your traffic increase.
