    The main advantages if directory submission is that Search engines crawl your site faster and your Page rank up by submit a link to high page rank directory like yahoo etc.

    It is basically a link popularity of the website.If the link is given to high PR,then it is more beneficial to your website and if you give link to low PR,then it is less beneficial to your site.overall, it is done to get the rank of the site in search engines.

    You'll get your site indexed faster. You'll also benefit from some backlinks, but those backlinks aren't particularly 'powerful'. If you're using a service that does it for you and takes 5mins to set up, then go ahead. If you're manually adding to sites then don't waste your time.

    The main advantage of directory submission is the diversification of linking activity. Directory submission can boost you back link and also help website to get some quality back links (although most of the directories are crap). A balance in your linking activity can give search engines the impression of a natural linking pattern. So the diversification can work for betterment.
