Can anyone direct me to some very basic GIMP tutorials, for the EXTREME novice?

Also, whick one do you prefer, GIMP or Picnik? And why?

I choose GIMP over any other graphics program. It is free and very powerful. At first it can feel a bit difficult to master, but later you will be happy with all the beautiful things you can create with it.

As for GIMP tutorials, try Gimpology.com. Also you may find the following thread useful, http://gimpforums.com/thread-beginner-s-tutorials

Don't rely on online apps, because they could disappear tomorrow.
Invest your time in learning GIMP. It's a powerful tool, and will definitely pay back the investment.

I personally love to use Amazifier. It is a nice and simple photo editor. It's a free one like Paint.net and PhotoScape but Amazifier is far more simple and a has real cool look and feel. You can't do professional stuff like Adobe's PhotoShop with it but its good for 99% of the photo editing I do. It has some nice photo effects, photo frames, stickers, etc.. You can get it from their website at amazifier.com.
