I use a service called SEnuke and it has basically got one of my sites to page 1 for a term that gets searched 12,000 times per month.

Continious backlinks are important for very competitive niches.

I have sites in very competitive niches that bounce around all over the place, even when I am building links, however in less competitive niches, i have seen my sites maintian rankings despite very little added linik building.

 

You can make use of Google Alerts to know where you can build backlinks. Just enter the keyword and set the mode to "comprehensive" and set the update frequency to "Daily". That's all. You will get fresh places to build your backlinks.

You know the saying, no pain no gain. You have to dig deep and work hard for backlinks - at least the ones that count.

Do press releases. Create a few blogs that you post to every day with valuable content, linking back to your sites. Post in forums every day. Practice social bookmarking. Create Youtube videos that will go viral, and put a link in the description.

 

If you write good, quality content, then reader will want to share it on their facebook, link back to you etc.

Forum posting, blog commenting and social media are the best options I think. If you are continuous with them, definitely you are continuous with your backlinks.
