Create a brand new targeted niche of people and imply the reason why they should use it. That should work for you.

Facebook already grown beyond control of anyone and it is almost like impossible to beat with their current funding and infrastructure.

Its possible. I would suggest tapping a small market where facebook has low penetration. You'll have to do some research on that. I started social networking when all my friends had myspace accounts. Slowly everyone moved to facebook and so did I. Seems like myspace is for the under 18 crowd while facebook is for the above 18 crowd. When the next big thing comes along, everyone will move away from facebook and on to something else so its entirely possible. Theres always something better out there. IMO, facebook is kind of just a fad. Eventually people will get bored of it and move on.

I am more interested in the marketing aspect of facebook. Its changing the way people get exposed to products. If you have a good product, people will definitely share that product with their friends on facebook. The little guy with a big idea could go along way just through a viral youtube video or viral facebook messages. Just look at the whole idea of people sharing their locations on facebook. The small business owner now gets tons of FREE marketing just by people posting where they are at.

It's a good question. I think it's very difficult to compete with Facebook. Sources said that Google is building a social networking site to compete with FB, we shall wait and see.

    It's like asking..

will another Google site be successful as the actual Google company?

And yes that's how big facebook is now.

I do not think it is good idea at all. You should not copy that and run ads like "better than facebook" :)

Definitely not something I would look at going into at this stage, Facebook are simply too large now and if rumours are true about other large companies bringing their own ideas to the table, then a small idea with minimal capital is simply not going to cut it and be a valid competitor :)

If something is large , population of people who don't like it is also large - look at anti microsoft windows movement and alternatives. anti IE alternatives, and so on.
You have a chance but it won't be that easy.

You need to target a niche. Thats how facebook started - their niche was students.

Maybe you could target old people? A lot of them see Facebook as mumbo jumbo because kids use it.

Or you could target people from a country facebook hasn't dominated.

Just give the site a different image and maybe add a extra feature that would appeal to your niche and you should be on your way!

Recently I've been thinking that the niche you could target for a facebook alternative could be privacy. A simple facebook clone that protected peoples information could do pretty well.

If I had a dollar for everytime I've read a post about someone wanting to start the new Facebook/Twitter/Google/Groupon, I'd be a very rich man.

Hah! Exactly what I was thinking.

Seriously, though, if you want to compete with a behemoth like Facebook, you need think of something wholly different from Facebook.
