My Gmail Got Hacked!!!

One of my email got hacked the other day from China.

What surprises me is that it was not much used. I logged into it two days back. Just after logging in I gave the password to my friend on phone. She needed a defunct email to register somewhere but then she didnt feel the need for it, and I trust her words. Neither did she write it down anywhere.

I logged in today and found that it was hacked from China. The hacker sent spam to everyone in the address book asking them to check his new website selling laptops etc.

I wonder how the hacker was able to login?? I am using original Kaspersky Internet Security fully updated. My logins of all the other sites I use daily are intact and show no suspicious activity.

Can an email be hacked by brute force? The password was just a name(an Indian name) followed by few random numbers.

I think when you had given your password and ID to your friend, he/she must have kept it open and never signed out from the google account. If you just close the internet explorer window and don't sign out from your gmail account, then your mail will open on anyone's computer in this world.

You must have given your email and password to friend who used it. Since you have changed your password, then there is nothing to fear.

I think Shawn gives you the right suggestion and you should try that. Make it as forget your password and to recover that by giving the answers of the security question provided there.

If you have setup and recovery mail then you would get a link to reset your password there and after clicking that link you can reset your new password for your gmail ID.

As long as the hacker didn't change the password, consider yourself lucky...
