    You are using version 3.8.4.

I think that version comes with Q&A verification option. I found that to be pretty effective against automated spam.

    Have you enabled it?

The Q&A is the only thing that will work. Even then, you will get new members that just want to spam and create links to their sites. A lot of the spam now is with humans, so it's tough to block them unless you approve all new members manually.

Some spammers are really wicked. They start dropping links after a few normal posts.

Sometimes they use hidden links. Only an active moderator can get rid of such spam.

No need to resort to manually checking registrations. Lookup the vBulletin mod that feeds off the stopforumspam.com database. It blocks 99% of spammer registrations, it is REALLY that good.

First off - do not allow new members to drop links. I am using vb 4.1.1 so I can setup a usergroup for new members, and
I have disabled new members from setting up a sig, then maybe bump them up after they have some posts under their
belt. I see no effective benefit to the forum to allow new members that have not made any forum contributions to drop links.
I realize this is a two way streak, and I do not mind allowing members to drop some links here and there, providing they
are making some contribution to the forum; If the link dropping spammers make this just about them, then screw them.
If they are not going to help the forum, contribute to the forum, provide content of value, then I feel I owe them nothing.

I also have q/a setup, and it is very effective.

from time to time I have to deal with the human spammer; sometimes you can not do much until they actually step up.

I've enabled a question users have to answer before they can register. Put the question as something only a human would understand (e.g: my forum is about Apple, so I ask who the CEO of Apple is - Steve Jobs). Cut down on spam significantly.

I have found that most spam mods do not do as much as you think. I had a spam
mod install recently, and the mod banned me from my own forum, and it banned
me then I thought it might ban other innocent members also.

    do a search on VB.org

it will tell you what they do...

the one that i use checks a db containing emails that spammers use...
sorta useless if they use a new email...Q&A works just fine for me....
