I have seen another thread about this somewhere on DP. Still think it's great that Google doesn't give a damn wether you're a big player or a newbie. Black hats get slapped either way :D

I think the NYT should be very careful at pointing the finger. With over 6 million links to the site, you will find that some of their results may also be questionable. Maybe JC penny should investigate this themselves.

Great way to destroy a competitor. Get thousands of unrelated links and then report them to Google.

This is the second time in a few months that NYT has gone after a website based on Google Rankings (decormyeyes.com is the other site). However, both times have been something I agree that should have been exposed.

While the NYT articles points out that the links were not similar to the pages they were linking to, that isn't why Google took action. JC Penney was using a link selling site to purchase thousands of links. If you check the link velocity via MajesticSEO you can see that it was a pretty recent event. The moral of the story, DONT BUY LINKS

They got the black hat pimp slapped off their head. That's going to kill the search firm, no one will use them now.

That's what happens when you try to cheat the system. Glad they got busted.
