Directories will never die, but business models will sometimes die. Throwing up a directory and waiting for links to come is mostly a pipe dream now. But building a quality site (human edited like robjones said) will always have benefits when they benefit the people using the site.

I am posting here after so many years and its nice to the directory gurus here...
As far as this thread is concerned.

    1. PR is dead years ago. If you are chasing after PR, i dont know what to say.
    2. Directories cant dead because always quality human edited directories survive no matter what. There has been so much effort put by editors writing titles and descriptions and there is no room for spam.
    3. The main reason why many people prefer submitting new sites to directory is not just for backlinks but to be quickly found by google for indexing.

No matter what Google will always find a way to combat spamming and people will always fiond a way to get around the new rules or just another way to spam. Optimize and link build the right way, not the fast way and you'll have longer term success. Just my thoughts...

I think you hit one of the most important issues, indexing submit site to directories like http://botw.org / http://ezilon.com / http://joeant.com and a few others for the speed pages are picked up.

Then it is easy to add new content to the site every few days and keep the spider indexing. Consistent indexing seems to support upper results rankings.
