Any way Google determine the crawl rate automatically but you can improve crawl rate up to some extent by Check in to google webmaster tools, try to give them a hit to crawl more in settings, check your robots.txt, meta tags on pages & xml sitemap crawl dealy object etc...
If you did submit your website & XML sitemap, your website will be crawl by Google. To make this process faster just ping your websites every page/post through ping services. Do social submission & ping those links also.
Most of the times Google will index a new website gradually, yes. That is at least what I have observed with most of my websites. How long you've started your site? Does your site has quality and relevant backlinks? Did you submit your XML sitemap to Google? If you did all of them above then now you just need to keep patience. Google will automatically crawl your site.

try to create backlinks for your site from higher pr and relevant sites. It will helps you in getting cached and indexed soon
It may be because your site not submitted successfully in Google so also check it once.Second thing create backlinks as much as you can on popular sites. Do social bookmarking in do follow sites. Also you can ping your site to google so the google notice it quickely....
Also, whats " a long time "? a day? a week or a month? I take it the site is indexed etc but you need to post more information
