Hot to find blogs that would agree to post an article which covers a requested topic

A hypothetic situation: we launch a new site/service/product and want to market it. We want to find a blog that would agree to write an article about it. What is the easiest way to find such a blog? I can only think of randomly googling related blogs and emailing authors but I guess it's not the most effective solution? Is there may be some site where blog authors offer to write articles and show some basic info about their blog, for example: tech blog about seo, 100 views per day, X usd for an Y-word article?

The idea is mainly not about getting backlink but rather about getting attention from the readers of that blog. Does is idea make sense or is it known as a not very good technique?

Personally, I'd write the blog myself so I know it's going to get the key points across. That way, you're then only paying someone to host your writing on their site and they might do it for a discounted price since they're actually getting free content.

Yeah, but if I start my blog, it will basically have zero visitors :) And I am quite puzzled with how I should get initial visitors. So I was thinking of finding a blog, which already has audience, that would agree to say a word about my new blog/site. A random example: I launch a service which generates cool captchas. Then I find a blog that discusses spam protection and ask them to post an article which mainly says something like "hey, check this cool new captcha tool"

Google Blogsearch (http://blogsearch.google.com/). Make a list of the sites that are related to yours and send an email to them asking if they would allow you to guest post on their site. Some will, most will ignore you. I get probably 20 requests/week for something like this. I generally ignore them, but I've allowed a few through and let them do a posting.

It's an uphill battle, but you can do it.

    Hi,
A little detective work on different blogs and you will find the contact details. Maybe "Chistian Little" could let us know what you are looking at when approving or not approving a writer. This would give as an idea how to approach the blog owner???

I have a very simple system, it's a basic mathematical function based strictly on how much alcohol is in my system at the time of reading the email. If there's enough, then it gets accepted. If not, it gets ignored. :)

HI Eugene, You are taking on a thankless and futile project if you are going to solicit blogs to write an article about your blog. Even if you outsource it and pay for the deed the results will be minimum at best.

Even if you get a blog or two to agree to do it chances are that they will be ones with little or no traffic which means you are wasting your... "effort to results" ratios.
A better way is to gear your blog is to take on reviews of others blogs or services. To do this you just subscribe to a few dedicated news feeds and plug in the story then give an honest review about it.
You have to ensure your blog is SEO friendly and it pushes your updates out to the world. There are tens of ways better than what you have suggested so I'd do some more research about how to generate traffic to your blog.

I hope these points are helpful if not thanks for allowing me to comment on your post.

Not necessisarly Daniel. The blog of mine that get such requests averages 5000 uniques/month and I allow probably 3-5% of the requests I get to go on the site. It may be an inefficient way of promoting a blog, but it doesn't mean every blog that accepts the request is not worth it.

This generally only works for political, celebrity, entertainment, or news sites. Not many people will care about some random blog's thoughts on alot of other topics. It can be done, just not very easily.

If you are going to make blanket statements, at least try to back them up with something. Saying 'there are tens of ways better...' and then offering to run a review-based blog is not very helpful.

Thanks for lots of useful info, that's a lot of food for thought. I am now not sure whether I'll go for that, I'll need to think a bit :)

Look for popular blogs in Technorati rating and Adage Power 150. Also google for "best blogs about [your niche]", that should return a few more lists. Then contact the owners and offer either to pay for review or write a guest post for them in exchange for a link. If you publish a post on a popular blog, that can give you a good boost both in immediate traffic and link juice.

Another great place to find guest blogging opportunities is MyBlogGuest.
