You can download an addon for your browser that can give you all this information. I use Google Chrome and have an extension called "Chrome SEO" - when you're at a competitor website, click on the button and it gives a ton of information about it including backlinks and Alexa ranking.

Backlink watch is really good to check the backlinks. But it is not enough I would like to say you that just type domain name in Google and check the results you will find the places where your competitors promoted the site.

I am using backlinkwatch.com to check competitors' back links. This is a good tool, which shows maximum number of back links to a website. You can also use yahoo site explorer.

    Hey,
As for the checking of ALEXA RANKS you need SEO quacke plugin which will be available on MOZILLA FIREFOX and for the backlinks you can go for yahoo explorer. Also you can wright link:yourcompetitorssitename in Google.

I usually type in link:domain.com on the various search engines - it usually shows me how many links the site has, it works on Google as well. I've been using this method for a while now.

My backlink checker is uselss - does not show any backlink except alexa rank. Every tool something different and that is the tragedy in checking backlink of any site.

You can use Market Samurai, but it's not free (they have trial version ) to find out the baclinks. Also you can use traffic travis. It's free and fairly good.
