Sub directories are much better for SEO.

Depends on what you are going for. Sub domains are actually seen by google as a separate website. In most cases, though a sub directory would be better.

Subdomains are used if you want to create a separate site, and will not help SEO for your main domain, it will cut your work in half (aka, take twice as long)
example: digitalpoint.com is different than forums.digitalpoint.com
directories will include your original domain, but act more like extra pages, thus helping SEO

yes even i second teh opinion regarding subdomains as NOT useful for SEO.

Use of subdirectories is much better.

Subdomains are seen as brand new sites, separate from your domain. (Although Google will deny this from time to time.)

Any pagerank your domain has will not be passed down to the subdomain. However, a subfolder will receive some of the PR juice.

Just depends on what you're trying to do.

Hmm... For me, if its a blog, its better to put it as a sub-directory.
But, if it's a forum, make it as a subdomain.

Agreed with fr@nc!z but sub-directory is much better from my point of view, but you still need SEO for that but it would be part of your domain so less effort will be required for that :)

If you have something very different from the main site, use subdomains. If you put something related with the main site, then use subdirectories.

It's either or really. Both do the same thing - and both are part of your domain regardless.

If you want Bing and Yahoo Traffic subdomains are great, but if you want Google serps stick with subfolders. You would have to juice up every subdomain which can get very pricey

For SEO purposes, none of these things really matter, so it’s more of a business/branding decision I think.

It depends on what kind of site you are trying to make. If you want a brand new site established then go for the subdomain but if you want a new place for blog posts etc then a subdirectory is perfect.
