Here are my best three Local SEO tips to rank well in search engines. I discover this with my own experience.

    1. Know your geographic market and ensure your domain has the correct TLD. If your primary market is the UK it is important to use a .UK TLD and ideally have your domain hosted on UK based servers.

    2. Get listed at all of the major local search engines and telecom directories. Start with Google Local and Yahoo Local. If you don't have the time to manually submit your listings, you can use some of known companies minor fee services.

    3. Get links from related local sites, industry associations, and the chamber of commerce. One thing to keep in mind is the importance of anchor text; the clickable words that link to your website. Ask your business partners to link to your website using the phrase you want to rank for as anchor text. You could even incentivize your suppliers to link to you in exchange for a discount, as the value of the links gained will far outweigh the short-term costs of discounting.

If you have any other local SEO tips please share.

There is a great service called Universal Business Listings that will submit your data to 100s of local business listing sites. I have used this for many of my offline clients.

Umm, you technically can use any non-CC TLD name and still get the geographical results you want. Google Webmaster Central allows you to set your target audience if the domain isn't a county coded one.
