On-page and Off-page optimization goes hand-in-hand. But it is advisable to polish your on-page first then do the off-page after

I read everyone's post and not one of them answered the difference between the two. Thanks to your comment, I also learned the difference between a band wagon spam and a genuine answer to the question too.

    CHEERS :)

    Eh!!!!

How wrong can you be. If your on page seo is`nt right then off page seo only will never work.

    You must do both.

    On Page First
    Off Page Second

Both are considered extremely important, think of them as a shop with customers, the shop represents te on-page SEO and the customers represents the off-page SEO

According to my opinion if you do good on-page seo for your website as per google terms and conditions and with little bit of off-page work you will definately achieve good results in google.

I agree with this. On page first, off page should come second.

Both are important part of SEO as well as interconnected in some sense ..... On-page optimizations helps you to understand a website better, it helps to rectify the website issues, allows you to check the current competition in you niche, helps you to develop a website which can be crawled easily by crawlers or spiders or bots..
It would be worthless to tell about how important keyword research is for any niche website ...!

Earlier i said, both off-page and on-page are interconnected one way or other .... I meant this because, off-page optimizers use keyword research file to perform off-page activities.

Promoting a website is one of the most important thing, off-page reveals your presence on Web. That simple.. :D

I advise folks to put a keyword-anchored link from every deep page back to the index. Put this link at the bottom of each deep page. This is optimal internal linking, and many people miss this step when doing onpage SEO.

There are two schools of thought on this practice. For several years I did exactly that — a keyword-rich link from every inner page back to the home page, rather than the text of those links simply reading "Home". Then I began reading a few recognized SEO experts (yes, there are some credible ones) who said, in brief, that there was little benefit to that practice, and in fact it even appears a bit spammy. I agree; it does appear both spammy and clumsy. My footer links on various inner pages were reading something like "keyword1 Home", "keyword2 Home", "keyword3 Home", and so forth. Then I realized that to my readers that looked silly. About a year ago I converted all my footer links to the index page back to the traditional — and reader-friendly! — "Home". I'm glad I did. Some posters out there will disagree, but I find the footers now much more reader-friendly. If ... and that's questionable ... if I've lost a little bit of SEO benefit by being less confusing to my readers, so be it.

The question was "...to rank my website". You've received lots of advice, some of it contflicting with others' advice. I will simply suggest this (assuming you have already written some decent copy): Use the Google Adwords tool, Wordtracker, etc., and do some serious research on each page's keywords. Then be sure that the best ones (best for your site, that is) are in the title tags. That may be the single best thing you can do to affect your rankings positively, which is your initial question.

I spend many hours tweaking the keywords in my title tags to increase rankings.
