This is the reason why I prefer ccTLDs over gTLDs.

    gTLDs

    - More then 3 characters long
    - All English words
    - Ulimited choice

    ccTLDs

    - 2 characters long
    - .CO/.TV/.ME are the only top 3 shortest global extention in the world
    - Limited choice

Soon .COM would be just a worthless gTLD like all those new gTLDs.

What's next ? .PIG .COW .DOG .ANT .RAT .CRAB .BIRD .WHALE .HUMAN ?

What's next ? .BLUE .YELLOW .PINK .PURPLE .RED .ORANGE .BLACK .WHITE ?

What's next ? .LESBIAN .TRAVESTITE .HOMO .FETISH .PEDO .STRAIGHT ?

What's next ? .PIZZA .PASTA .SALAD .BEER .COKE .SANDWICH .TEA .CANDY .CEREAL .MEAT .STEAK ?

What's next ? .TRAIN .PLANE .BIKE .SKATES .MOTO .BUS .TRUCK .PICKUP .SHIP .ROCKET ?

Hahaha Cheat, good post, but i dont agree with you in all. It is really stupid to have so much extensions, and that is not even good for regular Internet user as they will not remember all those extensions. I dont need even to mention how bad this could be for domain owners in some currently popular extensions.

But some of planned extensions have sense, i would say the best would be .green as it will be associated with ecology, not colors, lol :) And Hamburg is town in Germany, not hamburger ;)

But i would prefer that they dont add any new extension, i think that at the moment we have more than we need.

I honestly don't see the point of .green since the launch of .eco is in progress :)

THe best from the list are .free and .web in my opinion.

ccTLDs does not fall under the authority of ICANN.

I see a future ripe with possibilities... A future where short domain names will continue to appreciate... A future where ccTLDs (and especially short domain names in ccTLDs) will become ever stronger eclipsing the gTLDs.

All these new gTLDs will hurt the value of .com

Just think about... average joe wants sex.com but he can't afford to buy it for millions to a squatter so joe have the choice to get sex.xxx / sex.web / sex.gay / sex.girl / sex.boy / sex.horse ...ect for reg fee. :)

The possibilities are endless with gTLDs.

    The math is simple:

Unlimited gTLDs = Unlimited premium domains = worthless
Limited ccTLDs = Limited premium domains = worth

You can get sex.web and I can get sex.xxx

@lothos, tld's like museum, aero, jobs and so on are not meant for us, they are for people in that area.

I don't like extensions that are over 3 characters. I'm not a big fan of these new ones :(

In the end this will just increase the value of .COM.
Just ask yourself this question: How many new extensions in the past 10 years came out and where is COM now?
It's stronger then ever. Look at some of the HUGE COM sales on SEDO and afternic an compare them to a few years ago.

Everyone knows .COM, most people don't know 99% of the other extensions. The more new extensions come out, the more confusing it gets and as a result more and more people will resort to COM as it's basically the only extension that is known globally. Sure some small companies won't have the budget for a premium .com so will resort to buying a cheap gTLD. (as it is today as well) But all the bigger companies will continue buying COMs over any other extension. (and pay good money for it)

Compare it to this: If you are the owner of a company and had the budget what would you prefer? Would you buy a ferrari to represent how good your company is doing or would you go to work in some $10 bicycle imported from Taiwan? What would make your customers trust you more? IMO if customers see you have the money to buy a ferrari (or a premium .com) , they will assume your business is doing great and that you can deliver quality products or services as well. You will automatically get more sales because of it.

Finally, premium generic .COMs get type-in traffic as well, for new gTLDs this will be non-existing. As a matter of fact, the more new extensions that will come out, the more people (site visitors) will mistake the gTLD for a COM and thus end up on the URL of the COM instead.

A quick search shows that as of today more than half of active domains are .com
I used to buy others (.net .org .info etc) but now just stick with .com or country specific ones, like .co.uk if I am targetting local businesses.
As others have already commented - these new domains are just money making schemes for the registrars and don't really create value for anybody
