Directories are not losing their value. The problem is that many people budget $0 towards promoting their own sites and their results from submitting to directories equals their non-existent budget. Because of that they do not submit to some of the highest quality directories out there. Those in the know spend their money and time wisely by submitting to top directories.

The quality of most of the new directories being launched now is lower than it used to be. Especially all of the BIG NETWORKS of directories being created on .info domains. But high quality directories, though there aren't as many now, can still provide good links to your site.

I agree with the fact that people are searching for $0 directory and so the quality. But what about Dmoz, it is still free.

DMOZ is indeed free, but who wants to wait years for a review? That is assuming the category has an active editor and many at DMOZ don't.

Yeah! Current Scenarios give us an idea that Directories are soon gonna be dead because! there is no much use left of directories because it doesn't effect the rating or ranking of websites! Dmoz is not accepting any new submissions, Yahoo UK Directory finishing and Business.com also ending!

I think general link directories will have a hard time getting noticed in the future. If you launch a unique niche directory then I think you'll have something to build upon. Evolution is in motion and Google, Yahoo and the other big guys are in control.

Link directories are still a working function in link building, but it doesn't carry the weight it used to. Building links now with specific configurations are getting the much loved juice that needed in getting noticed.
The site Content Lockdown talks about that as well.

    Have fun!
