Alexa is pointless, but if you really want to be in top 100,000 then just install alexa toolbar in your browser.

How much traffic are you getting for being close to 100,000 in the rankings?

I have a ranking under 40,000. It will be hitting the 30,000 mark soon. This is not fraudulent ranking either. I don't really care about my alexa ranking so I don't use softwares and things to try and improve it.

It is genuine traffic and I can say that you need quite a few page views on a daily basis to reach the amount and it also depends what your sites topics about as with a topic like free online games, then there is likely to be much less of your visitors that have the toolbar installed to a webmaster related site.

Although I don't really worry about Alexa, I still like to see what my alexa ranking is like to my competitors and I would like to reach the 100 - 10,000 mark eventually.

I agree, even though it can be manipulated and it doesn't mean a whole lot, it can still be fulfilling to see your sites drop down to a nice low number :)

True, But so is the Google toolbar. In the google patent it even mentioned it might start recording what you have in your favorites.

It doesn't really worry me as I only check my alexa ranking through the Alexa site itself. There is no point in me having the Alexa toolbar installed as if I had done that then I will only be helping my rankings out.

Alexa is not accurate and doesn't mean anything, but it is still nice to look at to see if it goes low.

I am under 40,000 and I don't use any software or the toolbar.

This is properly generated from other people use my site from around the world that I don't know.

I've been below the 100K mark and back up to 300K, etc. over and over in Alexa. Meanwhile, I can track visitor counts and they were laughably almost inversed :) I have ranges from 1000 Uniques all the way down to 200 (erk) and Alexa was for the most part backwards on the "weekly" rank.

Getting a ranking below 100k can be done easily by scamming it, which I wouldn't do or by creating a site where your visitors are more likely to have the Alexa toolbar installed. These are mainly Webmaster type sites, affiliate sites, etc.

If you have a webmaster type site then you probably need something like 300 - 1,000 pageviews a day to keep around the 100k mark in Alexa.

If you have a free online games type site then you probably will need something like 20,000 - 100,000 pageviews a day to keep around or below the 100k mark in Alexa.

So it depends on what topic your site is about. It is easily for some sites to do well with Alexa ranking than others depending on your sites audience.

My alexa ranking didn't take many weeks to get to 50,000 once I hit 100,000.. hang in there doing what you've done up to your 100,000 ranking.. it's all about being persistant ;)

Great link. Thanks! While I agree that Alexa is relatively worthless re gauging traffic on a site, it does serve some purposes. Mainly, it makes for easier link exchanges, higher site sale/resale value, and/or higher ad rates. Of course, whether these valuations are foolish goes back to the issue of whether Alexa is accurate. Nevertheless, people DO use the Alexa ranking, foolishly or not, for the purposes I described above.

    Hiya,
    some of my personal experience.

If you are putting out original, quality content,

and you do a combination of:
    1) blog commenting on the top 10 blogs in your target area.
    2) forum post in related subject areas
    3) put out 1 article a week to the big article directories, like:
    goarticles.com
    ezinearticles.com
    ideamarketers.com

There's no reason why you won't have a great alexa ranking.

I was doing (1) and (2) above and got to Alexa 17k within a few days.

You can see my alexa rank at:
    http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?url=www.whoisandrewwee.com

Jason has a good post on Alexa ranking and whether it can be faked at:
    http://www.yfs1.com/2006/manipulating-alexa-isnt-what-it-used-to-be.html

I had some recent posts abt Alexa here:
    1) http://www.whoisandrewwee.com/156/is-your-alexa-ranking-worth-anything/
    2) http://www.whoisandrewwee.com/172/alexa-upgrade/

I have roughly about 3000 uniques each month and about 15,000 impressions.

but at the end of the day, I doubt you're on a CPM model.
You're likely on a CTR or CPA biz model.

so traffic isn't going to generate the income for you.
    Conversion is the key.

I was talking to Super Affiliate Ewen Chia, and he advised me to build my list as a priority.

Just doing pure traffic, might be nice for your alexa rank.
but alexa won't pay for food, or the nice things we all want.

I'd suggest setting up a good monetization system in place, be it adsense publishing or affiliate marketing, then focus on bringing in the traffic.

if you really need traffic, you can do other stuff like trafficSwarm, putting a post on DailyPlug.com (quite useful for me), listing on meta blog like Ping.Sg (I've got 7 of the top 10 posts for the year).

The biggest payoff for me though, is to engage with my blogging community.

Since I'm primarily focusing on Blogging and Affiliate Marketing, I've been visiting blogs and forums belonging to
    :
    1) Shoemoney (shoemoney.com)
    2) Jason (yfs1.com)
    3) Tyler Banfield (http://www.whoisandrewwee.com/172/alexa-upgrade/)
    4) Darren Rowse (ProBlogger.Net ---- his writing projects bring crazy amounts of traffic... and spiked my alexa rank)
    5) ok, I came across and haven't visited Jennifer Slegg (JenSense) (http://www.jensense.com/)

    ---
    Forums related to my niche:
    1) Internet Marketing Singapore (www.internetmarketingsingapore.com/forums)
    2) my own IM forum (www.digitalkeiretsu.com/enrol1)
    3) Shoemoney forums (http://forums.shoemoney.com/)
    4) DP of course!

    ---
Other stuff you can consider include:
    1) Consider Your Niche forum (www.whoisandrewwee.com/consideryourniche)
    2) listing on blog directories
    3) listing on RSS directories
    4) other meta directories like technorati, social bookmarking ones like del.icio.us, blinkbits, etc etc.

    ---
er, if you have a traffic plan in place, you really should not have a problem getting sub-10k alexa.

    ---
but then what're you going to do with the traffic?

You need to have your adsense or affiliate mktg systems in place, BEFORE you traffic generate....

Your alexa rank mainly depends on who has a toolbar installed and also how much traffic you get. If you get no traffic, then you will not have a good Alexa ranking or if your visitors don't have the toolbar installed then you also will not get a good ranking.

ps: go beyond alexa to install a namesqueeze and build your list instead.

a warm list of 1000 is prefable to 10,000 hitting your site., especially if you are actively doing affiliate mkting.

Over the last two weeks I have seen my Alexa rating go way down even though my traffic gone up quite a bit. This thing is not accurate at all. I assume it does have significant levels of accuracy at the higher levels such as the top 30,000.
