With this, you can't get traffic, you should have to analyze the competition first and then you have to work accordingly. You can also get some direct traffic from blog commenting and forum posting as well.
You can't get much simpler than this, but this is very general. Like alex629 said, you have to analyze everything and weigh in the competition you have and the volume of traffic you are expected to get. A high competition keyword will have you trying to rank for months at a time and unless you know what you're doing, you won't get the results you want. Have a detailed plan made accordingly to the competition you must compete with and make sure the effort put into ranking will be worth it. In other words, don't take 4 months ranking for a keyword that only gets you 10 hits a day.
I do not think it has anything to do with traffic. It may help little in better ranking but not with traffic. it totally depends on the kinds of keywords for which you are having first page ranking...
