Does PR mean anything?

Discussion in 'Google' started by Cabrelle, Dec 30, 2010.

Does PR really even matter? I am beating out all my competition with a PR0. I am starting to think it's just good for selling links and raising money. Anyone else share the same viewpoint?

The reason I make this topic is because I've noticed over the past few months that PR has become a huge controversy here at DP.

I share your view. You better focus on the position in the search results (SERPS). PR is only a very small factor in ranking in SERPS

Not like it used to be years ago. Pagerank can be a small indicator only while authority does more matter. However Google does never stated officially about website authority and the easiest way to judge the website is still pagerank anyway.

for last of some of the changes from google , I do not care about Pr because sometimes it is showing a website with 0 pr for saome of the high competitive keywords. Now I only care about my visitors from Google or any other website.

PR and SERP for a keyword is completely different. It depends on backlinks. But we can get the SERP by doing onpage and offpage optimization.

You are beating your competitors, that means you have good search engine rankings. And high SERP is possible only when you have an SEO friendly website with quality back links. And both these things help in achieving a good PR, which you may get in next PR update.

PR means if you are selling backlinks to others. This is against Google TOS.If your site is on first position for desired keywords -There is nothing better. Most of webmaters want pr update because they want to sell some links.

It means nothing. Having a bigger PR won't help you that much, maybe get some cash from selling links.

True, Page Rank means absolutely nothing. It won't affect SERPs in any way.

Besides, PR is about to be faded out by Google. This is bad news for anyone who worked so hard on PR and those selling or buying PR domains,

As long as people care about it, it means something. I don't care about PR myself anymore since it looks dead and its based on backlinks. I care more about backlinks in that case.

The best way to think about PR, from a business standpoint, is that it's a lot like stock ratings.

Do stock ratings have any bearing on the price of a stock? Nope. Do they have the net effect of encouraging people to buy the stock? Yes.

PR quantifies uncertainty. PR's biggest value is that assuages link buyers' fears about what they're buying. Same for domain buyers.

On a more practical level, PR lets you know a few things. 1. That the site in indexed by Google. 2. That some degree of meaningful link building has occurred and has been recognized by Google.

The problem I have with the "ignore PR and focus on link-building" meme is that link-builders should be watching the PR of what they're buying. That still circles back to PR -- the PRs of what you're buying. No, you don't have to buy or post super-high PR links. But, a PR3 or higher is nice to know about a link you're getting. When you combine PR with good keywords, then I'd say you have a good link-building campaign.

But... how true is this? Plenty of meaningful link building has gone on and pages still remain PR0. If PR never changes for the vast majority of pages, how is it meaningful?

For me it is something that it's nice to have but not the most important thing. If you are running a business website and you are truly beating your competitors and being profitable, to me that is what is important. What benefit is a high pr when a business site is not profitable. Therefore for me in answer to your question, profitability matters not pr.
