I have a large site. Over 50K pages. I have read that you should create multiple sitemaps and keep them in the 10K-20K range. So does one just upload multiple files and call them:

    sitemap1.xml
    sitemap2.xml
    sitemap3.xml
    sitemap4.xml
    sitemap5.xml

Yes. I believe you need to point out one sitemap to google via their sitemaps bit, and then reference the other sitemaps in the sitemap you pointed out to Google.

Or do you simply upload all the sitemap files to your Google Sitemap account?

They will ultimately find them all on their own, but it is best to speed things up by submitting them all to google.

i don't think that has something to do with google ...
if you have a 50k link sitemap than google will read it ...
no point in breaking it into small pieces.

Breaking sitemap will not hurt you. I have 2 sitemaps on all my websites and they're not penalized or anything like that.

I have more than 4 sitemaps and it is still the same as you have 1sitemap with large number of links. It's just a user preference to categorized sitemap or not... There is no such thing as how many links you can put to your sitemap

Google has no problems with a number of sitemaps. With sites having a large number of pages, on many occasions have I seen a number of sitemaps submitted to Webmasters.
