man..you did pick something that's way too competitive..but here is my stand..try to do some research and break it down to finding keyword that are less competitive and try to rank for those..that's your best beat my freind.

Did you ever think about paying for traffic with Adwords? This could help you drive more traffic/make more $.

Post videos to Youtube, Metacafe, etc. made by you or someone else and say "This site is brought to you by so and so at mypokerwebsite's-address.com" at the beginning and "This video has been brought to you by mypokerwebsite's-address.com - sign up here and get so and so bonus chips, a community that is awesome, etc.!"

Check out some Poker topsites and get your website listed there.

What it really comes down to is thinking outside the box, which is something that's absolutely necessary in order to get a foothold in a competitive niche with people who spend in excess of $10k/day on SEO like Texas Hold'em Poker. :)

I would go for some paid traffic to increase some activity in your website. Embed a nice video so that your visitor stay there for a while. Apart from building links and all those laborious SEO jobs, activity will show nice relevance and hopefully will give better results of your SEO effort.

I've worked with gambling sites before. The real trick to outshine your competitors is to be really creative with your marketing. I was able to make my previous client sit on the first page of Google for a solidly difficult and profitable keyword in just 3 months. The best tip that I can give you is to have the time to do the most tedious tasks in SEO :) Write content and spread your brand like wildfire. If you can't find the time to do all those, then it's best to outsource some of the other task.
