If you want long term results, you need to invest in an SEO company. In order to find a reputable SEO company, here are some things to look for:

    1. they have themselves ranked on major search engines.
    2. they have been able to consistently rank their clients on major search engines.
    3. they have a great reputation online.

Make sure you do your due diligence!

I'd also said it's important what services they provide. If such SEO company gets you tons of links from a network of websites, it is surely not a good company. Whereas so called "white SEO" is important today so such companies can be looked for.

Always look out for testimonials and try to verify them!

    Here's what I think counts the most if your looking to outsource your SEO services;
    - Track record - that is time in the game - I'm working with a crew that has over 9 years experience
    - Account management - some one that is prepared to wotrk with you to ensure you get results
    - Accountability - they should provide quality reporting that shows whats been done and how that has effected your search rankings for each target keyword
    - Whitehat and ethical methods - there are lots of ways to improve rankings in the short term but you need to choose a company that "plays by the book" to ensure that your web site does not get penalised longer term

I've been fulltime online for three years now and I know first hand how painful it is when all your hard work over several months can account for nothing when I do something "new" in the interests of better search rankings. It takes patience, consistency and a lot of hard work to get good rankings and to keep them. That's why I've chosen to outsource my SEO work and use SEO packages - I then know exactly what phrases I'm after and ensure that my sites are optimised for those terms whilst others do the grunt work in creating backlinks etc.

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers

    Darren

they should also have case studies you can review. As well as someone you can actually speak with who can tell you what they are going to do for your website.

works the same with solo or freelance SEO professionals, they're just way cheaper without the tax :)

Its important that when choosing one you shoold discuss with them strategies and terms. Any respected SEO agency will not guarantee you 1st ranking, no one can guarantee a #1 ranking in Google.
-ask them of their work, to see the examples and the confirmation of the success,
    - ask whether they use automated submittor, if yes stay aside, otherwise you site may be banned by the search engines.
-Where do they collect backlinks from? Backlinks are very important for SEO success. So, make sure the SEO firm collects links from reputable sites only.
-They should offer competitive prices. Not very hign not cheap.
    - also you may google their company name, in order to see whether they are well-known and respected, but however lack of info on the web doesn't mean they are scammers.
