OS Commerce is very difficult to install and use – and it’s very limiting. There’s not enough features to run an entire professional business. The same goes with ZenCart. Magento almost has it right, but it’s also very difficult to install and it’s slow.

You should look into a total online business platform such as http://www.haikuob.com which handles shopping cart, website, customer database and marketing features. It’s a hosted solution so you don’t have to worry about the technical stuff either. All the other bases are also integrated, such as the payment gateways, shipping modules etc., and you can even give your customers coupons and vouchers. It’s an all in one solution so you don’t need to juggle multiple systems.

Yahoo Merchant Solutions has a complete agreement on what you are looking for. Your shopping cart is a necessity for the quantity and quality seem to find. You have to pay for it, but it is far superior to the Online Shop. This solution is good, that you are going to get the affiliate networks and 100% of the costs performanced.

The best e-commerce software out there is hard to say. There are so many choices of opensource software solutions. You will want to customize the software after you get it. I recommend ezOSC.com .... Their software is based of off osCommerce and has all of the add on's that you would want after getting the basic software. It is super robust and scalable to any size.

After all the ecommerce sites i developed for projects and my ecommerce business ideas ....

osCommerce i believe is one of the worse
Megenta is great (the free version does everything you really need and has good documentation)
ZenCart is similar to osCommerce but slightly better
PrestaShop is good and has many nice features but hard to customize for beginners (i have use it for 4 years now and it's ok)
Miva is horrible - just horrible
Freeway - open source, has many features but very clunky almost as bad as osCommerce but i have to admit, it is better

all of the above i have used extensively over the last 12 or so years

I manage writersviews.com community website and the owners signed up for anaxstar.com and having used it for the last 6 months, I think it is really nice, great features, easy and reliable but i have only used it for the last 6 months and it is not free. I will comment after using it for 2 or more years.

    Hello guys...!
To be honest, I haven't really used any of these software's, but from my experience Zen Cart has been the best. The HTML and CSS is easy to customize, and it comes with anything you need.

    I use Zencart
Have tried Magento but found that I needed add-ons that other people had written and wanted to charge £200 for - so I dropped my Magento site and went back to Zencart.
Currently thinking of downloading Tomatocart to try as my hosting company installed Superlicious which gives you the ability to download a lot of these e-commerce sites
into your hosting space to try them out or to keep them as permanent sites.

I think the key here is to look for whatever has the largest community and does what you need either out of the box and it has to be open source. Find something that there are a lot of freelance developers working on it and you will get modifications cheap. I have used oscommerce, creloaded and Virtuemart, all were ok as long as you work them out and spend time finding out how they do things.
