    I think you would need to promote your own article directory firstly via channels like social bookmarking, social networking, niche relative forum and blog posting, article submission, press releasing and others.

    You can create content on Squidoo, hubpages or other web 2.0 sites and advertise your article directory there. Also, post useful comments on other people's lenses and include your site in the signature.

    The reason for doing so is that anyone who uses web 2.0 sites most likely writes and submits articles to article directories.

    I've used this strategy with great success!

    1. Promote in webmaster forums - Most of webmaster would love a free article directory to submit their articles for backlinks.

    2. SEO - Doing search engine optimization for a certain keyword which peoples do searching for article submission

    If you want to get more visitors you need to be in Google search top by your keyword. There are many methods to achieve that but one of the most important methods is getting natural backlinks to your website. Inner link optimization is also very important for website promotion. To get visitors you can advertise your website as well hovewer it is very expensive and there is no garantee it will work out in the way you want.

    Blog commenting and video sharing is a good option for generate traffic but its better if you use high PR and dofollow sites.
