    hi all,
i'm currently working on a website for the company i work for,
and i have absolute freedom in design and programming,
the only thing i am not 100% incharge off is SEO.
even due i do know seo, we have an seo guy in the company,
which is "doing he's job" (barely, if you ask me.)

the site i am working on dosent have a lot of content atm,
but, as i build it, google seems to just love it.
indexing pages from the same day i upload them, or a few days later.
so i guess i am doing good work.

lets go to the actual question, what do you think about linkback relevancy ?

the seo guy here, linked an hungarian website, about automobiles,
with an anchor text "Online casino" to our new site.

i find that really disturbing from a few points of view:
    1. the linking site is hungarian ( while the site i work on is .co.uk )
    2. the linking site is about automobiles.
    3. the site i currently work on is still not finished, and is "work in progress"
    4. the link anchor text is for a highly competitive keyword. (i would have used a long trail one)

i think i will loose points on google for those 4 reasons, what do you guyz think ?

    1. I have found in my other websites that links from other countries still help boost rankings.
    2. Relevant sites are nice but again still found results from non related websites
    4. Again I found in other websites it is good to go after some major keywords. I always check google adwords tool to see related words and how much they are searched when deciding what keywords to choose.

I think your idea on longtail keyword is a better one. Especially in such a competitive market. Your industry is crawling with spammers, which may make it hard-to-impossible compete for the example phrase mentioned above.

long tail keyword is advisable for newly publish sites but if the competition is very hard you can use long tail to play safe.

unrelated links work well. SEO is not just building links...It is also very important to build sites with good internal link structure and quality text, so your job is important for seo too.

@KMonte - i know that links from unrelated websites can boost your ranking, but i dont thinking linking unrelated websites at the "start life" of a website is a good idea,
actually , the first 50-100 backlinks, should be from related websites in my opinion. when you get traffic ( 500-1000 uniques per day ), unrelated backlinks help boost that a bit.
about the major keywords, it depends on the niche, casino websites are a really hard area to compete, if you start with the major keywords, you chances of getting anywhere are really low.
when a niche is highly competitive, you should go after the LOWEST long tail keywords, to score some traffic. that is from my experience.

    @adbox, Excel 8 - i totaly agree with you.

@jdr8271 - i wasnt asking about my job, if you visit the site, even due its "under construction" i guess you can see that i know my job.
but since this site shares its revenue between me and other coworkers, i want to monitor and be sure about their work, as well as mine.

Don't worry about number 1, because in Google webmaster you can target your country regardless to the website domain.

relevancy is becoming more and more important but irrelevant links are still shown to have a lot of weight
