    Just ask for backlinks instead of spamming. I've received plenty of links (granted you actually have a decent site to promote to them).

    Why go through all the trouble of getting .gov links if it weights the same as normal links...

    Because people think .gov links are worth something extra simply because they are .gov. Same for .edu. IMO this is a myth, but one that's hard to disprove.

    In Matt Cutts opinion links from .edu/.gov sites do not carry extra weight. That's enough for me :)

    You can search .gov and .edu websites or blogs in google by tying the "site:.extension:blog".
