The very first step is keyword research - on page optimizing - off page may include - article submissions - social bookmaking - link submissions.

 

I completely agree that submitting your site to web directories, and many social bookmarking sites is a good start.

 

Making backlinks through article submission and press releasing and social bookmarking are good ways but i don't believe in effect of directory submission.

 

First Check Your Website Rank After you start On-Page and Off-Page Optimization.

 

Find a good low competitive content for your on page optimization, this will get more traffic compare to high competitive content keyword.

 

1. Do your keyword research. Determine whether your keywords are high competitive keywords or not.
2. Do on-site SEO. tag your site keyword with <h1> tags
3. Do off-site SEO. Keep link building to your site. Google like natural link bulding to your site.
Yo can do it via, article marketing, video marketing, social bookmarking, blog commenting, blog guessing

 

I think you have got too many answers over here and now you have to decide which way to go.

 

Main key areas Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, Facebook on promote your site.

 

According to me, firstly start with on page after that you do off page that mean link building.

 

Do on-page first, the most important for me is:
-Keyword on title
-Meta description
meta keyword isn't important i think
then do link building(off-page)

 

you should start with onpage seo and read articles related and practice them.after knowing onpage you should go for offpage Seo and learn techniques like Article Submission, Blog posting, Directory submission,etc.

You will have Google's Official Guide for SEO beginners, its a free e-book. Download that book and you will be aware of the Key terms of SEO which makes your job while you are undergoing SEO training or experiencing it my experimenting on your website etc!

I also agree on the significance of onpage optimization. I do work for getting my onsite structure very strong, SEO friendly and easy to navigate. For promotion , I am tend to add some articles section to provide fresh buzz on my topics, blog section to make it more interactive, sometimes forums as well to discuss the FAQ and other questions with fellow vendors and keywords friendly service/product pages for making it better SERP.
