Do people actually have to choose your site specifically to buy ads on? Or do ads just automatically run on your site like Adsense?

When I used it, it worked just like Adsense. You do have the ability to run it on top of Adsense though.

I tried Adbrite once. Traffic was so so, mostly people looking for freebies. And they charged my credit card fast. So I gave up on it. I think it takes a lot of trial and error to find paid traffic that converts.

Traffic is the key along with stuff people really want. They could get expensive really quick, to me its like roulette.
