    i know google, yahoo, bing these all the major search engine, but there is lots of search engine which is not dominated, than how distinguish directory or search engine.

    Directories only contains website name, it helps you get index in search engine and search engines index you automatically, they gave rank to your website.

    Search engines crawl your sites automatically and normally they don't need to be submitted to, but directories you normally need to manually submit, although some of them do crawl the search engines. Directories are good when they are country specific. i.e in South Africa there is a directory called Ananzi which is very popular, but it only lists sites with South African content.

    Hello friend,

    you can get quality traffic through the directories.submitting your site to the search engine does nothing to increase your ranking in most cases.you can submit your site in as many directories as possible and if you submit your site in more than one search engine might slow down indexing time.
