    Definitely not dead.

Since Google Instant is showing suggestions the more you type, most of the searches tend to type more until they've pinpointed the keywords of keyphrases when they type.

Imagine someone looks for cheap laptops across in Google and he's from the California, of course he wouldn't just search "laptops" or "cheap laptops" straight away and he would most likely add the location and/or at least the name of the product which eventually makes it a long tail search.

I guess the only conclusive answer to this is to look at your Analytics account, are longtails still driving traffic ? They are for me.

    I don't think they're dead.

But you should get your keyword from keyword tool anyway, so this shouldn't be a problem?

Long tail keywords are what we need to be distinguished from the competition. So, if it works for you, then continue with it.

Google instant search is really great. It returns the results we want in less time. It also shorten the keywords we use for searching.
Longtail keywords are not dead. We know what we want so when we can't find the web pages we want, we'll turn to longtail keywords.
