Ranking drops after backlink from high PR

    Hi,

I used to rank #1 for a competitive keyword and in the last few weeks moved to #2. So i decided to get a backlink from a PR5 site to help boost it back up, and a day after getting the backlink i dropped to #3. Is this something google does, as i have noticed before after getting backlinks from high PR sites my ranking would drop for a week or so for that Keyword and then it would move back up to where it was or even higher.

Am i correct in thinking this or is it actually dropping off?

I once read that google does this so you dont know if the changes you made are making a positive affect??

You're using one anchor text too much? Perhaps it may have been considered spam if the case is positive.
It can also happen to the site you entered backlink contains some type of malware.

Maybe, the anchor text i mainly use for this page is 3 words long (eg. fishing club america), the competitive keyword i rank for is 2 out of those 3 words (fishing club), and the anchor text i used on this PR5 site is the 2 words (fishing club). So maybe Google thinks i have used it to much because the 3 word anchor text also contains those words. If that makes sense.

Hey Hgh PR means spamming.. Otherwise it is a google dance. When you make good backlinks google suddenly drop yur position and then come to god position.

    Thats what i thought,

My site is about 3 years old and has always ranked high, i only do link building on it every 3 months or so and only add about 3-5 sites during that period so im not spamming with hundreds of backlinks everyday on new sites, usually sites that are PR2, PR3 sometimes PR4. This time it happened to be a PR5 site. I checked Webmaster Tools and it hasnt picked up any of the new backlinks that were added within the last 48hrs by the looks of it. Hopefully it will come back to a good position.

It'll come back sooner or later. I guess there's some changes happened with the links outside your site. have you checked if your incoming links are still live?

I don't think linking to (dofollow) websites with high page rank is the reason why your rankings on Google goes down. As what others says, that's part of the competition why your rankings goes up and down.

Maybe Google just changed some of their algorithm and other sites perform better than you

The sites that rank above you, how are they doing in terms of backlinks?

There must be some other reasons. A backlink on themed website having high PR, does not harm your rankings. What were the quality of the websites already added on the page. I mean to say various theme website on one page, such as medical related, gambling related etc.?

Clear cookies on mozilla then check the ranking. If your doing whitehat backling 90% it is a google dance. I also experienced that many times. The reason is when google indexed few more backlinks it will dropped ranking and again come to same position or to a higher position.
