And what is the probability of conversion ?

The social networks could be a very nice place to make contacts, find new customers or hire employees.
It converts really well for some niches (tech related niches mostly) but not every niche could be promoted via social networks.

you could also go the paid traffic route with fb/twitter
it obviously depends on your niche, but in facebook you could drill down your target audience based on specific demographics

I use social networks in my job everyday... I would say that social networks are best for building relationships and helping spread the word about your product/service. It's important to establish your brand as credible by not trying to sell to people right away. I use Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn everyday. It's important to ask people questions, have a dialog and update often! Offer free bonuses of info or samples to entice people to check out your stuff. Send traffic to your website or blog.

from my own experience I can tell that:

    Stumbleupon traffic - almost non-convertable
Twitter traffic - just a bit convertable, but in cases when someone does a search on twitter for your services and finds your tweets
Facebook traffic - FB traff for some product or service is EXTREMELY hard to get, and it converts poorly too.. but yes, it all depends on your niche. some businesses are doing great on FB

but all three are great for gaining natural links! so you should not neglect them

I think firstly you need good FB profile and start building huge friend list and make relashionships with them. after that you can try to use viral video or simple tell friend viral method for your offers

Stumbleupon Traffic is not convertible, but if one of your Stumbleupon posts goes viral it does wonders for your PageRank and search engine position.
Twitter Traffic - This is my favorite traffic source, and I have driven tens of thousands of people to my sites from twitter. I use a Twitter marketing program called TweetAdder, and I did a video review of the product as well at: TwitterToolsBook.com/tweetadder3
Facebook Traffic - The best way to drive facebook traffic these days is to install facebook "Like" buttons into your site. For Wordpress I like the "WP FB Like" and the "Digg Digg" plugins for social sharing.

A comprehensive social media strategy will ensure that you can target the niche market that relates to your product. Whether it's on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or through your blog the golden rule to remember is that it's all about interacting - talking to these customers, listening and knowing what they want from your business. As others have said there is a direct correlation between this direct contact and rate of reply.

Facebook fan page are fantastic. It's like a giant targetted audience that follows you, like an email subscriber.
