If Google Drives You Nuts, What Would You Do?

One morning when you wake up, you find out Google has dropped your ranking.
Is it Sitemap resubmission? is it content duplication? is it same pattern repeated over and over? is it lacking of content?

or simply Google - the Zeus of search engine colony - goes wacko.

Now you have a task to bring the site up to natural top 3 position before dawn

    What would you do?

The first thing I do is to check webmaster tools to see if there are any obvious crawling errors.. The next is checking robots.txt and meta robots noindex in site's code. I would search for website's URL in google. If I can find the results there, it's mostly a temporary glitch (if I know I don't buy/sell links on these sites).

I would do almost same as jitendraag said. And to this: Now you have a task to bring the site up to natural top 3 position before dawn - Simply I will not take it to my head.

Ok upon checking webmasters tool, there are no errors but sitemap's.
Looks like Google will not consider sitemap resubmission under the same name.

To increase chances, I resubmitted the same sitemap variants with extension .xml, .xml.gz, .txt and sitemap2.xml, sitemap3.xml.
After a couple of days, Google shows green tick on some, but did not say that it will index them yet.

Today I checked Google took an old sitemap resubmisson and indexed half of full pages.
So I deleted all variants leaving the old sitemap that gets indexed.

Ranking has improved 1/2 rank better, but not a noticable difference.

    Will keep things posted.

Cant Google detect the sitemaps we put in our robots.txt file? I never did any sitemap submissions manually. All the time, I put it in the robots file and Google automatically picks it up

Depends on how far your rankings have dropped. If it was just like 3-5 spots down then it is quite normal.

Always remember that your competitors aren't sleeping and just because you think you've done enough doesn't mean that it is enough. :)

if your site has not received any penalties (and i think it didn't) it will come back in the search rankings .just make sure you have good content, and get links from related sites .work on it like nothing happened,do your job and the results will come
