Hyphenated-Domain-Names

Discussion in 'Google' started by Pronto! SEO, Oct 27, 2010.

Obviously Google likes it if relevant keywords are included within your domain name.

But is there a preference over the format they appear in as there is with page file names.

For example... would Google prefer www.cheap-widgets.com over www.cheapwidgets.com?

    Thanks

No, google treats them same. IMO, if you have chance, take them both

If the phrase was longer it would be beneficial to use dashes.

Not much difference both work well. For example: free-press-release do well with there domain name and they rank number 1 for the search term free press release.

I see some hephenated domain working better than the non-hyphenated ones.

Yeah, bogs was right. Even if you wasn't able to get keywordindomain.com, keyword-in-domain.com is not bad at all.

Go for the non hyphenated first then for the hyphenated

If you can, go for both, but use the non-hyphenated one in your link building strategies.

Yes Google prefer hyphen domains, but you have to put some more SEO efforts than non-hyphen domains. If you get keyword rich non-hyphen domain, choose that. otherwise hyphen is the option.

domain name is just a one factor ...important is how is your content ...how you have done on page for your targeted keywords...and lot more factors work after SERPs ...

this is one of my favorite topics to listen to people and what they say.
i recently read an article where a person took 4 domains.
2 each of different subjects but one was with and the other was with out hyphens.
    all .coms
    like catlitterbox.com cat-litter-box.com
and a different subject collegetextbooks college-text-books

he or she then went about developing them exactly the same.
    same theme, same content, ect.
ON BOTH scenarios, the hyphenated domain name performed at 80% of the non.
This was one of the best i have read and has me convinced.
You get an extra 20% by going without hyphens. But often it is no worries.
Heck that is just a good couple links to make that up =))
