Google Analytics doesn't track all traffic?

Discussion in 'Google Analytics' started by koolman2000, Oct 24, 2010.

I heard that sometimes Google Analytics only tracks visits of 30 seconds+, is it true?

Shouldn't analytics track all visitors as soon as they land on the site?

Yes you are right I felt that google always tracked that person who stayed at page more than 10-30 sec.

Complete rubbish - 30 seconds is a long time to look at a web page. It does track all visitors as soon as they call up the code. The only circumstances in which this wouldn't correlate to 'as soon as they land on the site' would be if you had an extremely slow loading site and the GA code placed at the bottom of the page or somewhere else that means people leave the site before the page has fully loaded. In which case, the problem is with the site, not GA.

Analytics does track all visitors but they track the time on site by tracking the time between the first and last pageview. Therefore if a visitor bounces (ie, only visits one page) they cannot tracking the time between first and last pageview as there is only 1 pageview. This causes the time on site data to be recorded as 0:00.

Analytics accuracy is always an issue with clients and webmasters. Fully understanding how analytics tracks your data is essential to understanding your website data. I recommend Brian Clifton's whitepaper on accuracy. You can sign up and download here: http://www.advanced-web-metrics.com

As far as I know, there is no time limit for a visitor to get tracked by GA.

Where did you get that idea from? GWT is for monitoring your keywords, bot crawling etc...Analytics is by far the best tool for monitoring traffic sources.

I would rather expect them not to track very short visits, say less then 1 sec - when the user clicks back before analytics code has a chance to load

that is false, but what you should all know is NO analytics is 100% accurate, although I believe Google Analytics is the most accurate.

Yes, It can be. Because i have some data for prove it. A good searches keywords ranked in top 10 for my site but analytic is not giving any result on this keywords that means google analytic have some trouble with new problem.

An other example- I have one solicitor site and it performed maximum no. keywords in top ten(around 350 keywords) but in google analytic is showing only 30 keywords. It is surprising for me. So I think:confused:, It can be possible that google analytic only tracks visit of 30+sec...

GA attempts to record all visits. That's how they calculate the bounce rate.

However, I see a lot of traffic that Google doesn't record on my site. The site is not slow but I think there are theme issues. A Wordpress site. Recently i changed the plugin that does the tracking and things improved much. It still is not right though.

If I go to WP stats I see significantly higher numbers.

So the problem is my site. Its not that google is not recording the visits. I am hesitant to use the word track because unless they click on something there's not really an tracking. :)
