It's a useless question to search the best WordPress theme. Themes depends on the purpose of the blog. Try to find a niche theme for your blog, don't just search for the best theme.
It depends on your niche, your personal taste and many. I give more weight to SEO and Adsense placements when finding a theme. Some people give more weight to looks and style in the theme,. So it depends! Paid themes comes with more options and look more decent when compared to the free themes. It doesn't mean free themes look ugly or like that, but paid themes will have few more advanced features.
