Interviewing Adsense Publishers who make $1000+/month

Discussion in 'AdSense' started by visio, Oct 3, 2006.

Recently because of a comment I recieved on my blog I decided to interview a few Adsense Publishers who make a minnium of $1000/month.
I would like to get atleast 10 but don't really have a max. Please send me a PM with the following information filled in. All I would like is a first name. If you would like to put your site url in that is fine and will be added but that is at your own discretion.
If you have anything else you would like mentioned feel free to ad that as well.
Again this is ONLY for those who make over $1000/month.

Send me a PM with the following filled in:

Name: (first name is only needed)
    Makes: $/month
    Uses Adsense on: # sites

What steps did you take to make what you make today?

How long did it take before you started turning over the big bucks?

What in your opinion is the most important part of becoming a success with Adsense?

What is the best way to turn in the highest CTR?

How important is content? Should the content be very targeted and helpful so the visitor finds everything they need or should it be slightly targeted so that the visitor is more apt to click an ad?

What steps should I take to start making $$$ with Adsense?

    >Should I read an E-Book on making money with Adsense? Or should I hire a SEO/Adsense Professional to help me?

How do I get traffic to come to my site? Should I advertise using Adwords or use organic SEO?

Do you believe that Web Design and color schemes of a site have an effect on CTR?

    >Do you use Rotating Adsense Color Schemes?
    >Do you use borders? And if not do you think it decreases CTR?

What should I focus most of my efforts on?

Should I find the higher paying keywords and create a site targeted towards those so that I make more per click?

Which do you recommend using for an adsense site a blog or a site assuming both are hosted by the user on its own domain.

Are there any things you would warn against NOT doing?

Any additional helpful comments would be welcomed.

AGAIN: Any additional info you might add or additional questions answered would be greatly welcomed. These interviews will be posted on my blog with a link to your website if asked for in a PM. Sites will not be posted for those who don't ask for that.

QUESTIONS: Got a question? Send me a pm.

Dave Gold, you are the reason why Adsense is going into the gutter. Stop your crappy spam MFA sites and go rob a bank instead of destroying the industry for the rest of us.

I think it might be more entertaining and educating if people who answer shared their answers like Dave. Visio's article is a nice idea but I think it'd also be a good contribution to the forum.

    domains cost : 500 x 7 = 3500 ( apprx)
    hosting cost : 500 x 20 = 10,000 ( much lesser if its a dedicated of course )

so approx cost of just keeping a 1 page website = 5000 USD minimum , 13,500 maximum .

add with this cost of creating content for 500 sites .

I would say , hardly a profitable venture till now . But i hope you cross the xxxxx soon :)

    Name: Will
    Makes:
    $18,010.13 in September
Uses Adsense on: About a dozen sites

What steps did you take to make what you make today?

I built good web sites which help people.

How long did it take before you started turning over the big bucks?

    About two years, part time.

What in your opinion is the most important part of becoming a success with Adsense?

Providing value to your site visitors.

What is the best way to turn in the highest CTR?

The 336x280 ad unit, with matching colors and no borders.

How important is content? Should the content be very targeted and helpful so the visitor finds everything they need or should it be slightly targeted so that the visitor is more apt to click an ad?

Content is king. Good content brings natural inbound links, which are absolutely the most important factor in building traffic and revenue.

What steps should I take to start making $$$ with Adsense?

    1. Decide what you want to say to the world.
    2. Build a web site about that.
    3. Put the AdSense Javascript on the web site.

Should I read an E-Book on making money with Adsense? Or should I hire a SEO/Adsense Professional to help me?

There's no need to hire anyone.

Aaron Wall and Joel Comm both have decent e-books, but you can find most of what you need to know for free in The Internet Search Engines FAQ.

How do I get traffic to come to my site? Should I advertise using Adwords or use organic SEO?

Some people do well with AdWords/AdSense arbitrage. I've always prospered in my markets with organic SEO. AdWords seems more directly suited for web sites which make money directly from product sales.

Do you believe that Web Design and color schemes of a site have an effect on CTR?

Definitely. Design issues can double (or half) CTR.

Do you use Rotating Adsense Color Schemes?

    No.

Do you use borders? And if not do you think it decreases CTR?

    Borders definitely decrease CTR.

What should I focus most of my efforts on?

Building quality content -- making your web site worth visiting.

Should I find the higher paying keywords and create a site targeted towards those so that I make more per click?

Definitely not. Build web sites about topics that you really care about. That's the only way you will ever create a truly successful web site in the long run.

Which do you recommend using for an adsense site a blog or a site assuming both are hosted by the user on its own domain.

Definitely a web site. Blogs are much harder to optimize for either SEO or CTR.

Are there any things you would warn against NOT doing?

Don't build too many web sites -- build 1-3 awesome web sites.

Any additional helpful comments would be welcomed.

Don't give up. Don't slack off. Slow and steady wins the race. Keep at it and you will succeed. Build new content every single day.

Don't focus too much on CTR, CPC, CPM, or even your traffic stats. Focus on taking care of your site visitors and they will take care of you.

I found Dave Gold's post to be.. Well, Golden. Even if it wasn't sarcasm, still funny as it's probably true that that is how some folks work the system to make a living.

We make well over $1000 a month from AdSense running around 10 sites. It took years of trial and error, learning various coding and scripting languages, and a touch of luck in places. More hard work and learning than luck though and by "learning" I mean making mistakes and learning from them best we could and moving on. Not getting caught up on the fact something isn't working, learn *why* it isn't working. Don't get caught up too much on the day to day either as just like any other sales jobs (anyone waited tables before??), you win some, you lose some. Overall, you want to do your best, stay creative, and hope to have more wins than losses or else, it's back to that learning thing. We rely on the tried and true "focus on a niche" idea and it's worked out quite well.

    Great response Will.

I do have a question regarding one of the sites in your sig, however...
    Forums about guns are OK?
I thought Adsense prohibits that, so I've been avoiding it on one site.

Clay, I would really address Google with the concern. It's sometimes in the context it's used.
